Notice of Temporary Winter Closure

For the first time ever, the Woodrow Wilson House will close to the public for four months this winter, from December 1, 2024, through April 1, 2025.

The Situation and Solution

The 109-year-old steam heating system has exceeded its life expectancy by decades. To preserve the remaining lifespan of our current heating system and protect our unique and irreplaceable collection of 100-year-old artifacts, experts advise us to maintain a stable 55 degrees in the house throughout the winter. This means we cannot comfortably welcome visitors or staff in the building during this period. This closure also underscores the museum’s urgent need for an updated HVAC system, one which will allow us to preserve the Wilson House and its treasures.

We have developed a detailed plan to install a highly efficient HVAC system compatible with historic structures. The next step is raising the money required to properly preserve this historic site. Our goal is $2 million dollars to get the project off the ground. Our top priority in 2025 is to raise the funds required to steward this site. Our objective is to preserve the Wilson House for generations to come. If you would like to donate to the help the Wilson House with this critical project, please donate here.

Our Work Continues

Even with the museum temporarily closed to the public this winter, our full-time staff will continue our mission. We will “bring the museum to the people,” at schools, libraries, public events, book talks, and workshops. The staff will also address critical routine maintenance, perform a thorough deep clean, and restore several of our cherished artifacts in preparation for reopening to the public on April 1, 2025. If you would like a Wilson House team member come to your school, civic organization, club or association, please email us: WilsonHouse@WoodrowWilsonHouse.org and we will set a date!

Historic Perspectives, Modern Initiatives

When Woodrow Wilson and his wife Edith retired from the White House in 1921 they made this house their home. Just off the beaten path of Embassy Row in the heart of Washington, D.C. the house is historically preserved - a time capsule from 1924 that is open daily to visitors.

Since 1963, the National Trust for Historic Preservation has opened the doors of the Woodrow Wilson House to the public, examining the impact of his consequential presidency and, more recently, taking an honest appraisal of Wilson’s triumphs and shortcomings.

Today, we are proud to steward this site as a vibrant community resource and a model of preservation and historical collections.  We offer tours, programs, special events, rentals of the venue, exhibitions and educational programming.
